This year, take your front door Christmas wreath to the next level. Instead of the typical spruce wreath, dazzle your guests with a bright and vibrant rose wreath. In this post, I will teach you how to make this DIY fresh flower wreath in 5 easy steps. Be sure to check out the video tutorial to see the work in action.
Supplies:
Corozone Rose
Bacarra Rose
Freedom Rose
Hearts Garden Rose
Burgundy Snapdragon
Yew Greenery
Cotton Stem
Twig Sticks
21″ Oasis Floral Wreath
You will need about 50 roses
Step 1: Hold the foam wreath under the faucet in sections to saturate the foam completely.
Step 2: Trim rose stems about 1-1.5″ in length and press into foam.
Step 3: Angle in slightly and push flower into foam. Angling in sideways makes the rose more stable, and it has a longer stem for the foam to grab then if you went straight down. Push stem into foam about an inch deep. You will get a feel for when the foam has the flower securely in place.
My roses had a day or two to open up. When the roses are first shipped, the blooms are tight. It is helpful to cut them, strip them of foliage, and place in water. That will encourage them to open.
TIP: After you push them in, make sure stems don’t poke out the other side. They won’t get water if they do.
Step 4: Keep filling in holes, because it is easy to miss one. Then try turning and viewing it from all angles.
Step 5: If you plan on having any accent flowers on the wreath like the snapdragons in my picture, don’t forget to leave a space. I forgot I was going to do that, and I had to remove some of my rose blooms to make room for the snapdragons and yew branches.
This part can be tricky because you have to tell the flower where to go. Fresh floral foam isn’t forgiving, so you can’t make too many mistakes. If you do make too many mistakes, the foam won’t hold a flower because it will look like swiss cheese from too many holes.
An arrangement fell apart on me on location before when I was setting up a wedding. In my early days, I reworked an arrangement so much, and it fell apart when I got there! Luckily, I had the foresight to grab an extra block of foam before I headed out the door, and I quickly remade the arrangement for the bride. (For those of you who don’t know, I have owned a floral wedding business since 2001.)
TIP: Hold the flower up and gesture the direction you want it to lay. THEN stick it into the foam about 1.5″ deep.
Add in the greenery around the snapdragons. Make sure to strip the stems of foliage before you stick it into the foam. That will ensure the foam is disturbed as little as possible. Hold the greenery branch up and visually try it in a few places. Once you know where you want to put it, squish it in.
For the final touch, I added fake twigs with crystals. I love how they add an exciting and dynamic flair to the overall design. I also added a stick of cotton to brighten up the roses and break up the red just a little bit.
This vibrant red makes a stunning statement for your front door. On a side note, I must say I am having a great hair day today.
