If you have ready my post about my recipe for Fiesta Dip, then you know I love Mexican food. I think it was passed on into my DNA from my mother. Mexican is her favorite too. El Chico restaurant is her first stop for date night. Grab your amigos and keep reading. In this post, I want to inspire you with fiesta themed decorations, and show you how to create a one-of-a-kind hand made vase for a floral arrangement.
When my friend Rachael asked me to decorate her daughter’s 17th surprise birthday, I jumped at the chance. She has the cutest home. With an eye for decor, I knew the party was going to be a hit. She picked up most of the decor pieces from Hobby Lobby like the pop-up cacti. But, man, they were cute.
She hired Tulsa Balloon, and they decked out her front stairway. It was so festive and colorful.
This cactus balloon stand was taller than me and was surprisingly lightweight. The plates came from Hobby Lobby. A lot of the little jars that dotted the house were apple juice containers she saved. Others came from The Bridal Garden workshop.
Here is the vase that I made for her. Let me show you how I did it!
Now for the tutorial:
- Gather your supplies. Craft paper or scrapbook paper, ribbon, vase, tissue paper, and wire. I used a glass cylinder vase because the straight sides make it easy to attach the paper. A curvy vase is a nightmare. Also, a glass vase makes it easy to peel the hot glue off when you are ready to disassemble the vase.
2. Cut strips of paper and hot glue them together. I measured my vases, so I knew how tall to make my strips and paper.
3. Turn it right side over and glue the strip of ribbon onto the paper.
To make the tissue flower:
- Cut tissue into a square. It helps if you have a cutting board. I used ten pieces.
- Once all lined up on top of each other, fold strips about 1 inch wide like you are making a fan. Keep folding back and forth until finished with the square of your ten sheets. It should look like the picture above.
- Hold in place with string or wire, as I did. A piece of wire is best because it will be used to attach to the vase.
4. Gently so that you do not tear the tissue, begin pulling up each piece. Continue until all the pieces are pulled up. It should look like a fluff ball when completed.
5. Make a hook out of the wire. I just tucked into the top of the vase and let it just rest there.
6. When designing the flowers, take extra care not to splash water on the vases and destroy the paper.
The vases looked really cute next to the candy bar.
