Making a yarn wall hanging is a fast way to decorate your home for any season. In this post, I will share how to make this tassel yarn wall hanging. Match the colors to any season, and you have an organic way to dress up your home.
I have shared before that my youngest daughter Marin could shop me out of house and home in the craft store. Give her a $1000 shopping spree, and she would have absolutely no problem filling her cart (or 3!), and she could do it in 30 minutes or less. I discussed this issue with her crafting obsession in this post.
We recently took a special trip to Michael’s to gather some autumn decor. Yarn was on her mind, so I channeled her creative focus into this darling wall hanging. Let me show you how she made it!
One of my favorite things to do as a mother is to arm Marin with the supplies, and then watch her create to her heart’s content. I remember as a child, my mother would do the same thing. I am number 5 of 7 children. That meant her time was precious, spending so much time caring for seven children. She didn’t have too much time to devote to any one project or any single kid.
Consequently, I learned to be creative and self-sufficient all on my own. For example, my mom just taught me how to thread the sewing machine. I learned how to sew Halloween costumes, my prom dress, period piece clothing, all on my own.
My mother showed me where the watercolor supplies were. I learned how to use them and layer washes and add detail all on my own. In retrospect, I am thankful for that chance to harness my creative ingenuity. It led me to an 18-year entrepreneurial career in wedding floral design, and then here to this blog. I love it more than anything in the world!
Here is how to make a tassel if you are a written instructions kind of person:
- Wrap yarn around a small book or closed DVD case about 40 times.
Slide all the yarn off the case, and all your yarn is wound up in a circle. - Hanging string: cut a piece of yarn about 4 inches in length (or longer if you want it to hang longer). Feed that through your string through the middle of your yarn circles to capture all of it. Make a double knot with your string. At this point, you have a bunch of yarn in a circle and one small string tied in a double knot looped though that.
- Making the tassel: holding the single string that is threaded through the middle, comb all of the yarn, and trap it with your fist. Take another piece of string 4 inches in length, and wrap around all of the yarn to cinch all of the strands together.
- Tie a knot with the hanging string at the top of the tassel.
