Being the wedding florist that I am, I usually have ample amounts of tulle lying about that I have used to decorate arches for weddings. What then, should I do with all that tulle? Make a Halloween costume out of it, of course! This costume inspired meΒ from Martha Stewart.

The problem, however, was that if I wanted to be a true witch, then I needed a witch’s hat. I couldn’t find a white one. There were plenty of black ones I could have purchased, but that wouldn’t match my white tulle. So, I realized I was going to have to make one. This post will show you step by step how I created this DIY Halloween Witch Hat.

I was lucky, and I found one at the thrift store. $2.00! You can’t beat that. But now I needed to make it white. Here is what I did:

1.) I laid two sheets of fabric together and cut my circle.

2.) I got rid of all the black material. I used a hot glue gun, and, inch by inch, glued the fabric around the wireframe. Watch your fingers and hot glue!

3). I cut a circle out of the middle about the same size as the black hat.

4.) Now for the cone part at the top. I used the black piece of fabric from the other hat as a guide, I made a pattern out of poster board.

5.) I quickly realized that the poster board “pattern” was going to need to be the base of the hat. I wanted to use this adorable white fabric to add texture to this cone-shaped hat. I was trying to be cleverly creative. You know when decorators tell you to that you have to add texture to an all-white room. Well, I was trying to apply that idea to my witch costume. However, the fabric was more substantial than the original fabric, and wouldn’t stand up by itself. I trimmed the ruffle fabric in the cone shape. I hot glued it to the poster board.
6.) I then hot glued it into a cone shape and attached it to the circle base with more hot glue. Hot glue was my best friend for this project.

And voila! A DIY Halloween Witch Hat in white. So, in the words of Glenda the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz when addressing Dorothy, “are you a good witch or a bad witch?”
I think the white witch may be the good one! What a great idea for an easy DIY costume. Thanks for sharing.
