I have designed with succulents for years in my wedding work. They can be a little intimidating looking at those delicate green babies, but, oh, they are cute. I have had countless brides sit in the chair across from me during their consultation and show me bouquet after bouquet that has these amazing little celadon green succulents combined with other flowers. I get it, and I love them too.
I am here to give you a few suggestions on how to use them in your wedding, baby shower, or party. Maybe you are giving favors at the baby shower you are hosting for your BFF. Or perhaps you want to try a decorative succulent bloom wedding favor. Look no further; I have some great tips and ideas for how to incorporate succulents for you here.
#1 Add Succulents To Your Wedding Bouquet
Succulents look fabulous in this bouquet surrounded by yellow spray roses and craspedia. Each succulent bloom is wired up with thick wire so they are able to be tucked in with the other blooms.
Burgundy leucadendron, salal (pronounced sa-LAL), and rose leaves provide an easy base for succulents to be threaded through this bouquet. This bouquet isn’t your traditional flower bouquet, and it was a delight to create a bouquet that wasn’t the typical style.
Dahlias provide a soft bed to display the wedding rings on, but don’t miss the succulent! These little green plants look and feel just like a flower. Nestled in with other flowers, they blend right into a gorgeous bouquet. Most succulent foliage is hard and rigid, so it takes a little finessing to get them to lay in the bouquet just right.
Curious to know how I prep these for a bouquet?
A) I gently take the plant and tap the dirt off.
B) I carefully thread a wire through the bottom of the flower or stem (if there is one). This step is the most critical part because petals can fall off.
Also, covering these plants is a fine powder, and fingerprints easily mar them to make them look damaged.
C) After wiring, I tape the wire down so that the faux stem will thread easily through the other flowers and not get stuck on another bloom.
#2 Succulent Boutonnieres
These make a great stand-alone or even mixed with other flowers. To me, boutonnieres are mini bouquets in and of themselves. They are these little compositions that dance on a jacket lapel. It is wise to be careful pinning these to the jacket because they are somewhat delicate blooms. A word of advice for any boutonniere would be not to wear them in the car so that your seatbelt will not smash it. A lesson I learned long ago in wedding work, is always to make an extra boutonniere in case of emergency.
These boutonnieres can even be made a few days before, and they still last and look great. So if you are interested in making these yourself, it is entirely possible.
This boutonniere picture is from The Succulent Source. At this site you can order a huge array of succulents that work for any of these projects and they come straight to your door. I have ordered from them for years, and the blooms always arrive safely packed and stunning a few days before my event.
#3 Succulent Wedding Crown

#4 Succulent Wedding and Party Favors
Succulents make darling favors for your guests or as presents to the wedding party. Why not give a gift that keeps on giving by continuing to bloom.
Here you can be creative with the type of container. Maybe the container is a mini flower pot. You can decorate these with your wedding colors or add a cute tag to them that reads: “Let Love Grow” with your names and date.
Or if you are hosting a baby shower, give a gift that keeps on giving. This DIY baby shower favor is darling with the tag that reads: “Shower Baby Marin Eleese with love”(Marin is my youngest daughter’s name). Another idea for the tag could be: “We can’t wait to see Baby Jake grow”.
#5 Succulents Are Easy To Propagate
Succulents are easy to propagate. Many brides do not realize that the succulents from their wedding bouquet can be a memento from their wedding day. Place the bloom right on the soil after the wedding, and it will grow a new root system in a matter of weeks. Propagate petals that fall off the plant by placing those in the soil. The leaves will produce a whole new baby plant!
